The official website of the Foundation for
Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases.
Almost one half million children and adults in the U.S., and approximately one million children and adults in India have primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDs). A large number of patients with PIDs are not even diagnosed. Patients with PIDs are more susceptible to serious life-threatening infections and cancer, and if not diagnosed die from these complications. More than 120 different PIDs have been described and several have been linked to gene mutations.
There is a great need to educate the population in general and specifically for practicing physicians to diagnose and treat these patients to prevent complications and death. In India, there are very few institutions where patients with PIDs are diagnosed or treated; the majority of patients remained undiagnosed and die, contributing in part to India’s high infant mortality rate. This foundation was created to support the education, diagnosis, therapy, and research of PID in both India and the U.S.
The Foundation holds its Annual Fundraiser Gala event at the Fairmont Newport hotel. The Foundation has established the Thomas Waldmann Award to recognize Dr. Waldmann’s contribution to primary immunodeficiency. This award is given annually to an outstanding immunologist/cell biologist who has made major contributions, directly or indirectly to primary immunodeficiency.
